Apache, the HTTP web server by The Apache Software Foundation is one of the most popular and widley-used open-source web server stacks in the world that has powered the web since 1995. Developed by the rightly named Robert McCool, and later a group of other webmasters formed the foundation Apache Group, which moved the software forward and to where it is today. Since 1996, Apache has dominated the most popular web server, getting overtaken by Microsoft-based servers in 2016, only to re-gain top stop again in 2019. Now Apache sits second with the lightweight alternative, Nginx, having huge spike and dominance from 2019 onwards, partly linked with Node.js usage and its ability to serve static content very quickly. Apache continues to be a popular choice for web developers.
